Steel structures, once installed in the sea, cannot be protected from corrosion by organic or other ordinary coatings for significant periods of time beyond a few years. Fairly indefinite protection can be provided by properly designed cathodic protection systems.

Cathodic protection in conjunction with protective coatings is a common method used to protect immersed parts of steel surfaces from corrosion.
